Spreading Love, Learning, and Community Across PHILLIPS

Seed Exchange Update: Growing Connections, One Seed at a Time!

We are back with an exciting update from our seed exchange program, part of the USDA Farm to School grant PHILLIPS received last fall! Our "Great Garden Crew" has been buzzing with excitement as we continue to swap seeds with fellow gardeners across the nation—and wow, has it been an adventure!

From the frosty terrains of Alaska to the sunny fields of Florida, our seeds have been making quite the journey, connecting us with passionate gardeners from Alaska, North Carolina, Utah, Ohio, and beyond. We've even received some love from our neighbors up in Canada!

When we started this seed exchange, our primary goal was to gather dwarf and micro dwarf vegetable varieties, ensuring that all students—regardless of space constraints—could join our Grow Together Project. The response has been incredible! We've not only scored plenty of micro dwarf varieties but also stumbled upon some super unique veggies and flowers that our students can't wait to plant.

The seed packages that PHILLIPS sends often include marigold, basil, or lettuce seeds harvested from last year's garden, leftovers from previous seasons, and some new additions we've acquired this year. Opening each envelope feels like unwrapping a little parcel of possibility—a new chapter in our garden's story.

As we eagerly await the next batch of seeds to land in our mailbox, we want to thank all our fellow gardeners who've shared their seeds and stories with us. Together, we're cultivating connections, growing communities, and sowing the seeds of a brighter, greener future—one envelope at a time. 💌🌱

Celebrating Black History Month at PHILLIPS Programs

February is a time to reflect, celebrate, and learn as we honor Black History Month at PHILLIPS Programs. It's an opportunity to acknowledge the significant contributions and achievements of the Black community throughout history. Join us in a journey of appreciation for Black excellence.

Our campuses feature displays and bulletin boards highlighting the stories and achievements of influential Black figures, from pioneers and leaders to unsung heroes. These narratives showcase the rich diversity of the Black experience and inspire our community.

We also highlight Black literature, offering insights into the diverse voices and narratives that enrich our understanding of humanity. A timeline of great Black leaders and their impact walks us through history, celebrating their contributions to equality, justice, and change.

This month, we're also showcasing a mural by our art teacher at Laurel, dedicated to Jimi Hendrix, reflecting his iconic influence on music and culture.

As we come together to honor Black History Month at PHILLIPS Programs, let us embrace the spirit of appreciation, reflection, and unity. Let us commit ourselves to fostering an environment of inclusivity, diversity, and understanding, where the contributions of every individual are valued and celebrated.

MANSEF Advocacy Day

At PHILLIPS Programs, we champion the educational rights of children with special needs. Recently, we joined MANSEF Advocacy Day, a vital platform for advocating the full range of educational options available to these children.

During the event, we emphasized the importance of individualized education plans (IEPs) and the federal mandate for a comprehensive educational continuum. We shared powerful stories showcasing the transformative impact of special education schools like PHILLIPS Programs, underscoring our commitment to partnership with local school systems.

Renee Flowers, our Program Director for PHILLIPS School~Laurel, led the charge, amplifying our message and inspiring others to join our advocacy efforts. Through collective action, we're working towards a future where every child with special needs receives the support and resources they deserve. And to top it off, we were fortunate enough to run into Brooke Lierman, Maryland's first female Comptroller and a true champion for our cause.

MANSEF Advocacy Day reminded us of the power of unity and determination in shaping policies and perceptions. Together, we'll continue raising our voices, championing inclusivity, equity, and empowerment for all children with special needs.
